GTA Trilogy - The Definitive Edition: The optical improvements under the microscope

Grand Theft Auto III (often abbreviated in GTA III) is an open world action-adventure game made by Rockstar Games and developed by the DMA Design studio. It is the third major component as well as the fifth game of the Grand Theft Auto series and stands out from the first episodes by the appearance of a 3D engine. It is marketed in October 2001 on PlayStation 2, in May 2002 on PC, in November 2003 on Xbox, in 2010 on OS X, 2011 on Mobiles iOS and Android, then in 2012 on PlayStation 3 (PlayStation Network). The game simulates the life of a criminal moving freely in the city of Liberty City. The player has the opportunity to choose between several missions, or can be content with walking around the city. Rockstar Games promises three PS2 classics in completely redesigned form with the Grand Theft Auto trilogy. Players may look forward to improved textures, a highly improved lighting system, supervised weather effects, more details in the landscapes and an expanded viewing distance. On the PS5 and Xbox Series X / S, a 4K resolution in 60 images are supported the second.

Reflections, weather effects, additional details and more

The biggest changes include the character models. The game figures fall due to a cartoon-like look. The skyline scene from GTA III again impressively shows the upgraded lighting and more realistic tree models. In addition, we realize that the former angular railways were rounded off.

The virtual Miami is now clearly beautiful to look at. In the PS2 version of GTA Vice City the neon lights were recognizable only at night. Now the bright lighting also shows the lights day. In the Gudge Las Venturas from the third part, improved lighting effects are also visible. All game worlds has been extended to new details, such as burning lights or plants on the balconies of skyscrapers. The characteristic palm trees are characterized by higher quality textures.

Particularly striking is the much greater visibility. Various objects in the game world can now be recognized from several hundred meters. Another significant detail are the readable license plates. In addition, a fog effect was introduced, which lets the revised game scene atmospheric. We see the amazing explosions at a scene of GTA III (4:36) and GTA San Andreas (4:57). The fire effects immediately create visible shades.

Otherwise, the developers have flat objects, such as the handles of shelves, converted into 3D models. Lastly, at the hands of the characters, the individual fingers are recognizable, which were previously glued to each other. The chunky hand models belong to the past.
